This is a portrait of Steve Buscemi I did around 1999. Nothing I did until around 2006 even compared to but having done this made me keep striving to get something comparable. Even though this was all pencil on paper it was the first time I ever used a computer as an aid to drawing. I took the reference from a People magazine and scanned it. Then I blurred it to the point where all I could make out was solid shapes of light and dark. This allowed me to get the proportions correct before I added detail. I knew nothing of anatomy at this point which is why it took me so long to get something similar.
